Our Story

Kayu Living started with a feeling more than a business plan.

On a trip to Indonesia we fell for the way things were made there — slowly, by hand, by people who had clearly done it a thousand times and still cared about the thousand-and-first. Nothing was perfect, and that was exactly the point. Each piece carried the marks of the person who made it.

Coming back to Scandinavia, we couldn't shake the contrast. So much of what we're surrounded by here is clean, calm, and beautifully restrained — but also a little anonymous, a little disposable. We kept thinking: what if you could have both? The soul of Indonesian craft and the quiet simplicity of Scandinavian design, in pieces actually built to last.

That's the whole idea behind Kayu Living. Furniture and objects that feel grounded and personal, made to live in real homes for years — not seasons.

Made by Hand

Most of what we offer is handcrafted by skilled carpenters and artisans in Indonesia, working with techniques passed down through generations. Because it's made by hand, no two pieces are exactly alike — there are small variations in the grain, the weave, the finish. We see those as the fingerprint of the maker, not flaws.

We don't do mass production, and we don't want to. Choosing handmade is how we help keep traditional craft alive, and how we support the livelihoods of the people behind every piece.

Our Curated Collection

As we've grown, we've also started bringing in a small, carefully chosen selection from trusted partners in Europe.

These aren't made by our Indonesian artisans. We add them for the same reason we'd recommend them to a friend: they're beautifully made and they share the timeless, understated feeling that runs through everything we love.

It's really an extension of how we already work. Whether a piece comes from our own carpenters or from a partner we trust, it has to earn its place before it reaches you.

Materials That Last

From the beginning, we've chosen materials meant to outlive trends: teak, suar wood, rattan, bamboo and natural fibres. These are the opposite of throwaway design — the kind of pieces you pass down rather than replace.

All the wood in our own production is covered by a FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance, and Trade) license, which means it's legally and responsibly sourced. It's part of a bigger commitment: fair working conditions, responsible sourcing, and a more circular way of using natural resources across everything we do.

About FLEGT Certification

The FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance, and Trade) license is part of the EU's action plan to promote legal and sustainable timber trade. It ensures that teak and other wood products are legally harvested and processed, supporting responsible forestry practices. By choosing FLEGT-licensed teak furniture, you're supporting sustainable trade and helping to protect our planet’s forests.
